Background to Psalms 90

Psalm 90 marks the beginning of Book Four of Psalms. Psalm 90 is the oldest psalm, written by Moses by the year 1440 BC. It is entitled “From Everlasting to Everlasting” and is noted as “A Prayer of Moses, the man of God". To read more about "What can we learn from the prayer of Moses (Psalm 90)?" click here.

Moses talks about God being our dwelling place...not the promise land or tabernacle. God is described in other parts of the bible as a rock, a hiding place, a strong tower, a place of refuge in every situation of danger and distress. In the writings of the Apostles, Paul says of God, “…in Him we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28a NKJV). In psalm 90, the imagery shows God is a place to live in for all generations and time.

Our days are short and numbered. Isaac Watts wrote "Our God, Our Help in Ages Past" as a paraphrase to Psalm 90.

Pray this prayer of Moses with Isaac Watts...eh maybe you might like this version better.
