Background to Psalms 55

Psalm 55 is his passionate reaction to some extraordinarily stressful events. The poem's structure or lack of it, reflects this. He personifies abstract nouns. The city is patrolled by Violence and Strife, inhabited by Malice and Abuse, with Destruction at work in it and Threats and Lies dominating its public life. Betrayal by close friend, overwhelms David with fear and distress which he expresses--summarised from here.
